In
early 1999, professional video-maker Hazel McAllister B.A. (Hons) C.I.E. and
travel-photographer husband Neil, made a journey through Bhutan, one of the
world's most fascinating countries.
Hazel's work in Britain involves production of high-quality social and corporate video productions, and the trip to Bhutan started as a holiday. It soon became evident however, that her video, shot in digital format for personal consumption, was capturing the colours, crafts, traditions, people, sights, sounds of this little visited region in a way which demanded wider consumption.
For geographical and political reasons, Bhutan has been isolated from the rest of the world, and has only recently welcomed visitors. As a consequence of this, and a policy of protecting it's heritage, Bhutan's unique culture has remained largely intact.
Hazel's film records this culture, on a journey by air from Kathmandu, landing at Paro's precarious airport. The journey continues to Thimpu, and onward to Punakha, winter seat of the government, and home to the country's most impressive dzong. From Wangdue Phodrang, we cross the Pele La Pass to Trongsa, then drive over the frosty Yotang La Pass into the wonderful Bumthang Valley. Lasting 1 hour 40 minutes, this production , available as VHS tape or DVD is a gentle excursion for the armchair traveller, a primer for future visitors and a superb souvenir for those who have already experienced this magnificent country.
